Email Marketing Tips for Small Businesses Owners:

  1. Keep it simple

Just starting out? Don’t have a fancy CRM? Don’t even know WTF a CRM is? Don’t worry. The point of keeping it simple, is just that, to start where you are with what you have and what you know.
The important thing here if you haven’t picked it up already is is just to start. Try a free email marketing platform such as MailChimp or Campaign Monitor and send monthly or weekly eDMs to your database. It can be as simple as that when you’re just starting out.

2. Know your audience

The holy grail of marketing is knowing your audience so you can send the right message to them at the right time. You can too, with just some basic knowledge of who your target audience is. Have this in mind, or better still, write down a profile of who you believe your target audience is and write to their pain points and how your product / service is going to help each one of them.

3. Be Consistent

Once of the biggest things with email marketing, and marketing in general really, is just to be consistent. Whatever you end up committing to, in terms of frequency of sends, just stick to it and stat consistent. For example, if you want to send weekly emails to your audience on a Monday at 4pm, make sure you stick to Mondays at 4pm. Easy huh.
And whilst we’re talking consistency with email marketing, make sure your branding [font, colour palettes, logo usage] is consistent too. It’s all about creating and building trust with your customers and consistency will help you to do this.

4. Content is [still] King

I’m sure a lot of you reading this have heard this saying before and are nodding along, but also thinking, what content and how do I know what content to send to my audience?
You know what, as a small business owner, you’re not alone here. With more social media and digital platforms at our fingertips than ever before, the importance of content and having a solid content strategy and plan couldn’t be more timely. If the thought of a Content Strategy or Framework is already starting to put you off, hang in there. It’s not as daunting as it sounds. Even just start by thinking about some themes that are aligned with your brand values and where you’re audience is at, and write with this in mind. Remember your brand exists to help and add value to you customer.

5. Test & Measure

And last but certainly not least is to adopt a test and learn mindset when it comes to your email marketing. When you’re starting out, be open to testing subject lines, times of day to send your emails and even different call-to-actions within the body of the email.
Start a simple spreadsheet to capture your results so you can measure the performance of each email campaign and start to build a bank of data for learnings and insights, so you’re continuously optimising and improving your email marketing.
